4 Perfect Days - Families
Rise and shine with Pecan Cinnamon Raisin French Toast or Huevos Rancheros at the Blue Moose at the south end of Main Street, serving hearty home cooked meals and generous portions in a family atmosphere. What would a summer adventure in Breckenridge be without a trip to the Breckenridge Fun Park? Test your skills on our climbing wall, take a leap from the Sky Fly Power Trampoline, get lost inside Colorado's largest human maze, jump inside the bounce house or lose all sense of direction inside a three ring gyroscope!
A big morning leads to one thing, a big appetite! Take your crew to Salt Creek, on Lincoln Avenue, for sizeable portions of texas-style pit BBQ. Then, put on a hard hat and hear the drills as you venture 1,000 feet into a century old, authentic gold mine - the Country Boy Mine. Tours are approximately 45 minutes long every hour on the hour. Be sure to meet one of the friendly burros that roam the mine site.
Get a sitter for the tired kids and take an early evening carriage ride through town and end up at the Hearthstone, an 120-year old Victorian home located on Ridge Street, in the heart of Breckenridge. A local's favorite since 1989, the Hearthstone features wild game, fresh seafood, and hand-cut steaks all creatively prepared by their talented culinary team. After dinner, stop by The Crown on Main Street for a relaxing nightcap featuring the Ghiradelli Martini.
Sleep in (if your kids let you). Recover from your first day in Breckenridge. Don't forget to drink plenty of H2O - high altitude can make you dehydrated. A hearty dose of carbohydrates is also a good prescription for making the most out of a vacation at 9600 feet. Stop by Columbine Cafe just upstairs from Downstairs at Erics, for an over-the-top cinnamon roll or pancake as big as your head, where breakfast is served all day! Then, listen to the sounds of the trail and the creak of the saddle leather as you experience the splendor of the Colorado high country by horseback. Ride through spruce forests and lush meadows. Breckenridge Stables offers up the Breckenridge Trail, 90 minutes of spectacular scenery.
Kudos are in order for Empire Burger, Breck's first "real" burger joint, which opened in June, and is located at the south end of Main Street in La Cima Mall. Aside from the obvious, this trendy eatery features handcut fries, oh-so-tasty onion rings and chocolate malts that might as well be dessert. It's quick and easy and the perfect fix to hit the spot. Now you're set for a much needed afternoon in the Blue River Plaza, where kids, dogs and everyone in between take advantage of the crisp mountain air. Catch free afternoon entertainment there on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons throughout the summer. Top off the afternoon with mix and match candy by the pound at Corner Candy, also located in the Blue River Plaza.
Bring the entire family to enjoy fresh Mexican food in the cozy cantina of Mi Casa, located on Park Avenue, where the Mango Duck Quesadilla paired with a frozen margarita is a combo you won't soon forget. On your way home, stroll the streets of Victorian Main Street and grab and enormous chocolate chip treat from Mary's Mountain Cookies.
Take the fam to Daylight Donuts for a hearty breakfast, serving up your basic eggs, hash browns and pancakes - not to mention the iced donuts with sprinkles. Then get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Breckenridge offers over 40 miles of paved bike trails, perfect for families on bikes or roller blades. Great Adventure Sports, located in the City Market shopping center (and along the bike path), can provide you with all your gear and rental needs.
An active morning in Breckenridge leads to one thing: a good appetite! Swing by Giampietros, on the corner of Lincoln & Main, for New York-style pizza by the slice, or for a healthier alternative, stop by Euro Deli just a few doors down on Lincoln Avenue. After an early afternoon nap, venture over to the Breckenridge Recreation Center, located just north of Main Street. Check out the two climbing walls, racquetball & tennis courts, indoor track and indoor pool. There's even a waterslide (parents, you can slide too!). Here you'll find the local kids tearin' it up in the skate park and the waterlogged testing their paddling skills at the kayak park.
In the shrimpin' business? Located right in the center of town, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company offers children's portions as well as amazing mountain views from the deck. After you've had your fill from the sea, mosey down to Greta's for an ice cream treat.
So the fam's a little tired after three action-packed days in Breckenridge. Send mom or dad out to Clints Coffeehouse to pick up a few OJ's, coffee and the best blueberry muffins in town! If there's one intermediate family hike that encapsulates everything wonderful about Summit County, it is the Mohawk Lake trail. From sweeping vistas, historic ruins and ore cars to waterfalls and close-up views of massive, rugged peaks, the Mohawk Trail is a great, 7 mile trail that should not be missed. You can reach the trailhead by driving south out of Breckenridge on U.S. 9. As you reach the last stoplight on your way out of Breckenridge, you will travel 2.4 miles before your reach Spruce Creek Road. Turn right onto Spruce Creek Road and proceed for 1.2 miles to a well-marked parking area and the Spruce Creek Trailhead.
You've got to make the most of you're trip to Breckenridge and your crew is raring for more! Bring your Chaco's, beacuse a trip to Breckenridge is not complete without rafting one of Colorado's most exciting attractions, Brown's Canyon. This river trip is great for both first timers and experienced rafters. It has just the right amount of exciting whitewater with scenic views of 14,000-foot peaks and granite canyon walls.
If there's one restaurant you have to hit while you're here, its Downstairs at Erics, on Main Street. Chances are you've already heard about it. Quite possibly Breck's best pizza, burgers & rotisserie chicken - they've got it all, not to mention 120 beers, 25 of those on tap. If your crew can handle it, go for the gigantor (24in, 452 sq.in. monster pizza!) Get there early as it tends to draw a crowd, but there's an arcade to entertain while you wait! By now, the little tikes have spent the entire trip begging and pleading for t-shirt, so now is the time to give in! Shirt Off My Back, just across from Eric's has the best selection of silk-screened and embroidered t-shirts, hoodies and hats. What's a trip to Breckenridge without a souvenir?
